Dobies Health Marketing Welcomes New Talent in Creative & Client Services

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — As the health industry ramps up efforts to come back strong from the pandemic, innovative healthcare marketing strategies are in high demand. In response, Dobies Health Marketing continues to expand its creative and client services teams. Last week, the Kansas City-based healthcare marketing firm welcomed Alexis McDowell as Account & Digital Project Coordinator and Donna Broussard Segura as Healthcare Marketing Writer.

“Alexis and Donna bring the right experience and skillsets to deliver exceptional work with powerful results for our clients,” said Thom Ludtke, Vice President of Creative Services. “As we adapt alongside our clients to the emerging needs of the post-pandemic health frontier, we are growing our team in ways that continuously strengthen our ability to do what we do best: blend strategic thinking with creative communications to create healthier brands.”

As Account & Digital Project Coordinator, Alexis works with clients and internal teams to ensure on-time, on-budget execution for all marketing, branding and advertising initiatives. As both a graduate and former employee of University of Missouri, Alexis brings a fresh understanding of cutting-edge digital marketing strategies, including design. Upon graduation, she hit a marketing homerun when she was selected as one of only 12 students to join the St. Louis Cardinals First Pitch Program Inaugural Class. Most recently, she has worked as a design professional and a project coordinator in the solar industry. She also worked with conversion software at Cerner. With a knowledge base grounded in technology, popular culture and the arts, Alexis brings a unique perspective to the firm’s strategy-first health marketing expertise.

“For a long time, I knew I wanted a career that would combine creativity and strategic thinking to elevate brands,” Alexis said. “I’m thrilled to join the Dobies Health Marketing team, where I can put my skills and passions to work in ways that create not only healthy companies, but also healthier consumers.”

As the newest member of our content development team, Donna Broussard Segura has more than 20 years of writing and marketing experience. She has worked at every level in the healthcare industry – from medical social worker to marketing executive. Donna has published a magazine, organized expos and hosted a health-focused radio show for the burgeoning 50+ market. She has also worked in program design and grant writing, garnering millions of dollars in funding for nonprofits. At Harvard, she was an editor at The Harvard Crimson and accepted into Harvard’s competitive creative writing curriculum, with studies that blended creative writing, psychology and visual arts.

“With clients that range from international biotech giants and academic medical centers to local non-profits tackling the healthcare needs of the homeless, I knew this was the place and team for me,” said Donna. “I’m so excited to exercise the full range of my imagination and curiosity to touch every aspect of this life-saving industry as it reimagines daily the possibilities of health. The heroes in the healthcare field deserve every ounce of the passion I bring to my work.”

Welcoming Alexis and Donna to the team is the latest in a series of developments that mark increasing growth for Dobies Health Marketing as it approaches 30 years in strategy-first health marketing. Earlier this summer, the company added Client Services Director Kristi Bond. With deep experience in digital/interactive projects, Kristi serves as a liaison for web and digital campaigns.

Alexis, Donna and the rest of the Dobies Health Marketing team can be reached at 816.753.3336.

Dobies Health Marketing Recognized as Healthy KC Workplace Wellness Certified Business

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Dobies Health Marketing is proud to again be recognized as a Healthy KC Workplace Wellness Certified business, receiving Gold honors for its company health and wellness efforts in 2020-21. This certification comes from the Healthy KC Workplace Wellness initiative, created in 2014 by the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce in partnership with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City.

Dobies Health Marketing has been honored since 2016 by the Healthy KC program, which recognized more than 100 businesses across Greater Kansas City this year. The program assesses the actions a company takes to support health and wellness across five Pillars of Wellness: healthy eating, active living, tobacco cessation, work-life integration, and design-built environment.

The Dobies Health Marketing staff worked remotely most of 2020 to keep everyone as healthy as possible during the COVID-19 pandemic. That made the emphasis on physical and social activity even more important. Employees joined impromptu challenges and planned efforts to set weekly walking goals; encouraged stretch and digital detox breaks; shared healthy smoothie recipes; and participated in friendly competitions for hydration and healthy eating.

These efforts align with the culture of wellness that Dobies Health Marketing traditionally fosters in the workplace – with standing meetings and work areas, nutritious snack options, exercise bikes, balance balls, a space dedicated to healthy lifestyle tips, and team outings that encourage fun physical activity.

To help make the rest of the world a little healthier, too, Dobies Health Marketing employees are dedicated to our paper reduction and recycling program. As we track and monitor the use of paper and color copies, we report and post on how many trees are saved each month or quarter. The staff also makes excellent use of recycling bins for aluminum cans and cardboard – even taking recyclables home when bins are full.

“This recognition is a testament to our team,” said Carol Dobies, Founder and CEO. “I love how our employees, in the face of a global pandemic, hunkered down in their newly formed home offices and found personally gratifying ways to continually live and share the company’s mission of inspiring health and driving better health decisions. We truly appreciate the honor and congratulate all the KC Healthy companies for making employee health and wellness a high priority.”

Healthy New Year’s Resolutions

After a tumultuous 2020, I am eagerly looking forward to the future. COVID-19 is still destroying lives and livelihoods, but vaccines have arrived and our healthcare workers finally have hope. It’s that kind of hope that renews one’s belief in what’s possible. So, I decided to take some time to think about my New Year’s Resolutions. Not wanting to choose highly restrictive and unsustainable resolutions that will go by the wayside, I think I’ll do more of the things that have served me well during the Pandemic. I think these are particularly well suited to the company, as well. In 2021, I resolve to:

  1. Seek what’s possible. When you always believe in what is possible of being done, not contrary to the nature of things, good things happen.
  2. Start with strategy. “Strategy first” is our brand promise – it drives us to produce meaningful, authentic work for our clients. For me personally? Starting with strategy means tighter alignment between my goals and actions.
  3. Create new adventures. I summited Mt. Kilimanjaro two years ago, which at the time, I thought was the adventure of a lifetime. Since then, I have learned bold and sometimes risky adventures are all around us. Bold and sometimes risky is good for the company, too.
  4. Make healthy decisions. We come to work every day to change the way people think about health. I can say it is an absolute privilege to help a client, a friend or a loved one make a more informed decision about their health. More healthy decisions are good for everyone.
  5. Give back. According to research, giving back to those in need can enhance happiness, improve your health, and even extend your life. In 2020, we leveraged company resources, talent and time to improve our local communities through a Give-Join-Care approach, exceeding our Corporate Social Engagement goals in every category. I look forward to how we can help improve the health of our communities again in 2021.

Students Get a Taste of Healthier Eating Through Apple a Day Program

Carol Dobies works with Cristo Rey seniors for the Apple a Day program.

Carol Dobies, CEO of Dobies Health Marketing, helps teach high school seniors about eating healthy.

April 11, 2019 – Dobies Health Marketing and Natural Grocers joined forces again yesterday for the third annual Apple a Day event at Cristo Rey Kansas City, a Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth High School. This year, the focus was on engaging the senior class in healthy food choices as they transition into adulthood. By creating healthy foods together with the seniors in small-group sessions, the Apple a Day presenters provided hands-on guidance, resources and recipes that will serve the students well in college and beyond.

The Apple a Day program, created by Dobies Health Marketing, is available to pair corporate sponsors with schools to demonstrate to local students how easy it is to eat healthier. Inspired by the adage, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away,” the program is designed to educate youth and their families on the benefits of eating fresh fruits and vegetables every day, so they can begin to offset their risks for chronic diseases and obesity.

Natural Grocers shares nutritious recipes during interactive Apple a Day educational sessions.

The Apple a Day event is part of Cristo Rey’s Health Day, when students take part in a variety of fun programs related to health, fitness, safety and wellness. Courtesy of Dobies Health Marketing and Natural Grocers, each senior received a fresh, organic apple along with take-home tips, recipes and food suggestions. In addition, the seniors were encouraged to enter a prize contest by sharing photos of themselves eating the healthy foods on social media.

The seniors then prepared some easy, nutritious snacks with Brooke Seiz, Nutritional Health Coach at Natural Grocers. Seiz, a graduate of the Nutrition Therapy Institute in Denver, Colo., is board certified by the National Association of Nutrition Professionals and has additional training in functional medicine and counseling psychology.

Social purpose is an important part of our company ethos,” said Julie Amor, president and chief strategy officer at Dobies Health Marketing, adding that Apple a Day is one of three elements that comprise the firm’s GIVE-JOIN-CARE approach to corporate social engagement:

  • GIVE: Dobies Health Marketing donates one percent of its net revenue back to the local community each year, providing funds to causes that promote better health.
  • JOIN: Dobies Health Marketing, in partnership with Natural Grocers, inspires healthy choices and addresses childhood/adolescent obesity – one apple at a time (through the Apple a Day program).
  • CARE: Dobies Health Marketing employees regularly volunteer for causes and events that create healthy Kansas City communities.

“We love to engage in creating healthier communities and support a cause-driven culture – not only for ourselves, but for our clients as well,” Amor said. “There’s no better feeling than knowing we are making a difference in how people think about health.”
